RULES + GUIDELINES

Dates and Deadlines: 

  • Submissions open: Tuesday, August 20 

  • Deadline to submit: Friday, October 11th, 6:00PM CST

  • Winners/Finalists announced: TBA

  • Public screening at Southern Screen Festival - Nov 21-24 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts

General Guidelines:

  • Film Theme: The Next 200 Years: The Future of Lafayette
    Lafayette’s future is brimming with possibilities in every sector—from infrastructure and technology to culture and beyond. What is your vision for the Lafayette of tomorrow? Do you have ideas for enhancing the city’s infrastructure? What about groundbreaking technological innovations? Imagine Lafayette in the year 2224: How will fashion, jobs, education, art, communities, and transportation evolve? Share your bold vision for what the next two centuries could bring to our city.

  • Open to grades 6–12

  • Films must be between 30 seconds to 5 minutes long. (At least 30 seconds, but no longer than 5 minutes.) 

  • Students may submit as an individual, group of 2 or group of 3. (The maximum number of members of the group is three.)  

  • Submissions are open to all students at any public or private school.

  • Groups may cross over between schools and grades, however they must all be in the same level - all in middle school or all in high school.

  • Only online submissions will be accepted. 

  • Film entries must be submitted by October 11th, 6:00PM CST

How to Make and submit your Short Film:

Step 1 - Re-read through this entire page to make sure you understand the guidelines and have everything you need before you begin.

Step 2 - Decide if you want to create the video on your own or ask others to partner on the project (maximum 3 people)

Step 3 - Pick an idea that represents the below theme:

The Next 200 Years: The Future of Lafayette
Lafayette’s future is brimming with possibilities in every sector—from infrastructure and technology to culture and beyond. What is your vision for the Lafayette of tomorrow? This is an opportunity to showcase your creativity! We encourage and welcome unique views and original ideas.

Step 4 - Use Screencastify on your Chromebook to film your project. Or if you have another device you would rather use, feel free to!

Step 5 - Print out your Permission Slip and Talent Release forms.

The Permission Slip will need to be signed by a parent or guardian. (Each student participating needs one)

The Talent Release will need to be signed by anyone featured in your film.

*These forms will need to be uploaded on your submission form

Step 6 - Make sure you have good lighting and sound while filming. (Click HERE for tips on lighting and HERE for tips on sound)

Step 7 - Take the time to edit your film. (For Chromebook Screencastify options, click HERE for a tutorial) 

Step 8 - Ask a parent, teacher, or friend to watch your film and ask them if there is anything that they do not understand. Make changes as needed to your short film based on their feedback.

Step 9 - Get ready to submit! Save your film to your Chromebook Screencastify. Or Google Drive. Or drag and drop your film to our Dropbox

Also make sure you have all of your releases and forms signed and then upload scans or photos of them to to your submission form.

Step 10 - Pick a team member to submit your film and fill out your submission information on this Google Form.

Submission Checklist:

  • Each team member’s first and last name, age, grade, school, and teacher’s name.

  • Film title, genre, and length.

  • Link to the film, and the password if you have one set. Or your film must be uploaded to the Dropbox link above in Step 9.

  • Signed permission form for every filmmaker.

  • Signed releases by everyone in your film.
